On the road
Lead-in:
• Material: a photo of a typical London bus in black and white on a transparency
• Teacher asks questions like: What is it? What colour is it? Where can you see it?
 Pupils are supposed to make the connection to London
 “We are going on a trip to London and other places in Great Britain. I already packed my suitcase.”

Pre-Activity:
• Material: suitcase with different objects for example: tooth brush, passport, umbrella, a pair of socks... The class sits in a circle and the suitcase is in the middle of it
”Close your eyes and take one object out. Can you guess what it is?” (The other pupils should decide if the object is named correctly)
2nd round: Teacher holds up several objects; Pupils repeat the word spoken by the teacher in a chorus
A story is read out by the teacher for the first time. It describes the journey from several sightseeings through Great Britain (e. g. We visit Big Ben)

While-Activity:
• Material: A huge map of Great Britain, picture cards of the sightseeings that are visited in the story
Each pupil gets all picture cards and while the teacher tells the story a second time, they have to hold up the matching picture card (to increase the degree of difficulty there are some additional pictures that do not appear in the story)
Teacher reads out the story a third time and chooses a pupil to pin the picture card on the map (the picture card with the sightseeing has to match to the place where it can be visited)
To activate the pupils´ language the teacher asks some questions concerning the comprehension. E. g.: “Where do we start our trip?” (Point to the map where we are right now)

Post-Activity:
• Material: postcard
Teacher asks the children to write a postcard to their family/friends. They can choose which place they want to write about and they can draw a picture on the front
Prepare the children for language demands by collecting important phrases. E. g.: greeting-“Dear _______”

Closing:
• CD with the song “God Save The Queen” + lyrics
Teacher explains the pupils the importance of the Queen for the British people, gives them the lyrics and they listen to the song  preparation for the next session about British habits (e.g. breakfast, tea-time, monarchy)
