Description of our Project on the topic “planes”
The lesson is designed for the end of 4th grade or the beginning of the 5th grade. We have decided to work chronologically from past to future and created a series of tasks for each step in the history of planes. Therefore our focus is on vocabulary, oral skills, writing skills, understanding and creativity.
In our “past-step” we showed pictures of different historical planes and asked the students to describe them briefly. By that we wanted to activate the pre-knowledge as a kind of brainstorming. After that the students got the pictures with an instruction on a worksheet, so that they are able to write the results down.
In our “present-step” we had our elaboration phase. We created flashcards with an example of a dialogue at the airport. The students were supposed to write a dialogue on their own. They had to decide between “checking in” and “passport control”. Afterwards they can prepare these dialogues for acting it out in class.
Furthermore we handed out a word puzzle with typical plane-vocabulary. The task was to find a certain amount of words in there.
After that the students are supposed to read the instructions of paper airplanes and to create them. For those students who worked faster than the others we also had a second instruction.
In our “future-step” the teacher hands out a work sheet with pictures of “future airplanes”. This might give the students ideas for the creation of their “own future airplanes”. Some students could present their results to the class.
